Country-fied: Life in the Dakotas

By Elaine Babcock

Country-fied people grow up with a unique awareness of their dependence on the land.  Their roots reach down into the earth in search of stability and sense of place.  They live their lives with dignity hard work, and the ability to laugh at themselves even when the prices are low, yields are down, it is too cold, too hot, too dry or too wet.

Some of them have to work in nearby towns to supplement their incomes.  Others lose their farms and have to move to the city.  Wherever they go, they take their work ethic, determiniation, sense of humor and belief in God with them. Country-fied tells stories of country people and people who live in the small towns that depend  upon the farmers and ranchers for survival.

Author Elaine Babcock grew up on a ranch west of Pierre, South Dakota, and later moved to a farm in the Ellendale, North Dakota, area.  She has experienced life from both West River, with its miles and miles of rolling grazing land, and East River with its flat, fertile farm land. She has written about these experiences for the past 10 years in the Aberdeen American News.
